The Erasmus+ Exchange Programme

For destinations within the Erasmus+ programme, check the UvA World Map (choose 'Exchange', select your study programme and then, under 'Select a programme', choose 'Erasmus').

How to apply

More information about the application procedure and conditions for participation can be found on the Application page.

Erasmus+ Exchange Grant

As an Erasmus+ student, you are eligible for an Erasmus+ Exchange grant that allows you to cover extra living and travel costs during your stay abroad. The grant amount is determined annually by NufficExternal link. You are only eligible for the Erasmus+ Exchange grant if you have been selected by your faculty for a place at a foreign university. Students selected for this by their faculty will automatically be nominated for an Erasmus+ Exchange grant by the UvA's Central Erasmus Office.

Available top-ups

If you receive an Erasmus+ grant, you may also be eligible for the green travel top-up or the inclusion top-up. The green travel top-up, consisting of additional compensation based on your travel distance and a maximum of additional scholarship days, is available if you use an environmentally friendly and sustainable means of transport for your trip to the host country. The inclusion top-up is available if you experience an economic barrier or one or more barriers falling under disability or health problems. More information is available on Canvas after you are selected for an Erasmus+ scholarship.

The general scholarship amount is set annually by the European Commission and the national agency in the Netherlands, NufficExternal link, and is linked to the country of destination.

After graduation

The Erasmus+ programme does not support study exchanges after graduation. However, it is possible to do a work related internship abroad with an Erasmus+ Traineeship grant after you graduate.

How the Erasmus+ programme came about

The Erasmus+ study programme is an initiative of the European Union to improve exchanges between universities in the European Union and promote cooperation in higher education. The European Commission funds these exchanges. All UvA programmes participate in the European Erasmus+ programme. The individual study programmes have concluded student exchange agreements with partner universities in European member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway and Türkiye.

More information on where Erasmus stands on inclusion, citizenship, the environment, partnerships, mentoring and support can be found in the Erasmus Charter and the Erasmus Policy statement
