  • Responsible use of ICT facilitiesAs a UvA student, you use many digital systems. Security is vital for you and others. Here's a summary of rules, tips and tools for working safely in digital environments.
  • Use a different, strong password for each of your accountsChoose a different password for each of your accounts. A strong password has at least 12 characters and meets several other requirements. Change passwords annually and don't reuse them.
  • Watch out for fake emails: phishing and ransomwareDid you know that a hack often starts with a phishing email? Just a single click on a link or attachment in a fake email can result in the infection of an entire network with malware.
  • Basic security for your laptopYou are personally responsible for securing your laptop. Follow the steps below to make sure your laptop is well protected.
  • Secure your smartphone or tabletFollow the steps below to make sure your smartphone/tablet is well protected.
  • Storing, sharing and emailing files securelyUse the following software/tools to ensure the security of any files, documents and data, both yours and others’.
  • Two-step verification (MFA)The UvA values studying safely online. In pursuit of this, two-step verification (MFA) is being applied to an increasing number of applications. This adds an extra step when logging in.
  • VPNWhen you use a public, unsecured Wi-Fi network, first set up a safe connection with eduVPN (Virtual Private Network). A one-time download to your laptop or mobile device is required.
